Kel-Tec has stated that it has no plans to make any brackets or other accessories for the P50, letting the aftermarket "do its thing." While the P50 doesn't look like Kel-Tec's other current firearms, the pistol has original Kelgren designs, especially those based around the .22 ring cartridge. The 5.7 mm cartridge has gained wide popularity in the civilian market. This began with several manufacturers other than FN introducing their own 5.7x28mm FN firearms, including CMMG, Diamondback, and MasterPiece Arms. Last year the Ruger-57 pistol kicked the domestic 5.7mm ammunition market into high gear with new loads available from Federal's American Eagle brand as well as Speer's Gold Dot defense line. With cartridges now more popular than ever, it makes sense that Kel-Tech would add a firearm in this chamber to its lineup.
The P50 is divided into four main parts for cleaning and maintenance. A release lever on the rear of the grip is pushed down, allowing the receiver to be pulled out of the grip frame (slot) so that the magazine can be installed or removed.
At the heart of the P50 is not just the FN P90 cartridge, but the company's 50-round, horizontally mounted magazine. This polymer magazine stores its cartridges in a double column perpendicular to the axis of the firearm. The spiral feed chamber rotates in a circular straight line to feed the chamber. Like the FN P90, the P50 uses a direct recoil action in which the bolt rests on two guide rods that compress dual recoil springs as it moves backward. The mechanism is housed in a perforated aluminum receiver. The magazine is mounted in the opposite position of the P90, with a circular motion upwards. The fire control components are housed in the lower polymer body that uses a grip with the same shape and texture as other Kel-Tec firearms.
