Zoo Atlanta opened in 1889. A traveling show bound for Marietta, GA stopped short of its destination. The animals began to grow in droves, and businessman George Valentine Gress bought the collection and donated the animals to the city of Atlanta. They were moved to Grant Park. 1951-1967 was one of the largest periods of zoo construction and renovation. in 1961 they added a newborn gorilla, and in 1999 Lun Lun and Yang Yang, a pair of giant pandas on loan from China, arrived at the zoo. The zoo is 40 acres and has 1,500 animals and 220 species. They offer free admission to members of the military.
