This file contains additional information that may be added by the digital camera or scanner used to create or digitize it. In 1962, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) defined V/STOL transport, but no contract was awarded at this stage. However, the Italian Air Force ordered two prototypes from the Italian manufacturer Fiat Aviazione in 1968 and a ground test structure, which flew for the first time on 18 July 1970. However, the first of these aircraft, designated G. 222, entered service in April 1978.
And called the C-27 Spartan, it got ten people. The planes are based at Howard Air Force Base in Panama, Central America. However, due to high maintenance costs, they were retired in 1999 and brought to Arizona's Davis-Monthan Airport for storage.
The type has also been acquired by the air forces of Argentina, Venezuela, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, Nigeria and Somalia. 20 were donated by the United States to Argentina in June 2009. The G.222 is one of the few cargo aircraft that can perform spins and other dynamic maneuvers.
Development of the type saw the C-27J marketed as a solid tactical aircraft, complementing the Lockheed C-130J Hercules with emphasis on a variety of cabin, avionics and engine systems. Features a Honeywell fitted glass cockpit, new avionics, redesigned engine and new APU. Development of the C-27J was established between Alenia and Lockheed Martin, a joint venture known as Lockheed Martin Alenia Tactical Transport Systems. Alenia, however, carried out the certification process, produced the aircraft and conducted flight tests.

The first Alenia C-27J Spartan (NC4043, I-CERX) took off on 14 June 1999 at Caselle, Campania, Italy and flew on 24 September 1999, the second (NC4115, I-FBAX) on 12 May. 2000. The first delivery was made in October 2006 to the 46th Airlift in Pisa.

Engine The Lockheed C-130J Hercules is powered by a Dowty R-391/6-132-F/10 six-bladed 4.15 m (13 ft 7 in) propeller. In subsequent years, the model was offered in Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Slovenia and Taiwan. In January 2016, it was announced that the purchase of ten Spartan aircraft had been delayed for almost two years. According to the Australian National Audit Office, the delivery of the last six has been delayed by 20 to 24 months. The delay is said to be due to the manufacturing process being moved from Naples to Turin, Italy. On 15 May 2016, a RAAF C-27J (A34-004) was conducting landing and takeoff training at Waco Regional Airport, Texas, USA, when a twin balloon collided, forcing the runway to be closed and several evacuations.
