This file contains additional information that may be added by the digital camera or scanner used to create or digitize it. In 1962, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) defined V/STOL transport, but no contract was awarded at this stage. However, the Italian Air Force ordered two prototypes from the Italian manufacturer Fiat Aviazione in 1968 and a ground test structure, which flew for the first time on 18 July 1970. Development of the type saw the C-27J marketed as a solid tactical aircraft, complementing the Lockheed C-130J Hercules with emphasis on a variety of cabin, avionics and engine systems.
