The most important (and perhaps most difficult) part of your process when moving to Hawaii is real estate. (If you are a Marine going to Hawaii and will be in the barracks, go through this section!) Military members stationed on Oahu receive the third highest BAH with residents in the entire country, due to the high cost of living . in Hawaii. According to military.com, BAH starts at $2,922 for E1 for Honolulu County (includes all of Oahu). There are pros and cons to living on or off the roots.

Defense Department Civilians, Families Offered On Post Housing Options

At MCBH there are two housing options, 802 and Forest City. 802 housing is old housing on base and you get your full BAH, and are responsible for paying rent each month: it's about $1700, plus electricity. 802 homes have two bedrooms, two bathrooms and one or one and a half bathrooms, and allow two pets (no air conditioning). When it comes to money, saving money is the best option.

Another option is to get a house in Forest City, these houses are newer, bigger and have air conditioning. There are 10 different areas of MCBH that provide housing in Forest City. These homes are good options if you have a family and pets. These homes range from 2-4 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms, usually with a garage and driveway. These homes are the largest square footage you can find on the island that also allow pets. The downside to Forest City is that they take your BAH in full every month. That means you pay nearly $3,000 in rent every month.

Being on base has many benefits for soldiers and their families. There are many programs and services available to you in the center. This allows you to enter the military lifestyle and be surrounded by people in similar situations to you and your family.

Outhouses make the most sense for families without children or pets. It is very difficult to find homes that allow dogs and cats in Hawaii, especially on the windward side of the island where MCBH is located. To live within a 15-20 minute drive to MCBH your rent will be at least $1900+ and the houses will be less than base.

Bah Increased At 28 Areas Including…wuuuut, Seriously?

If you don't need more space, rooting is a good option for you. Another plus for the outhouses is that if your most important thing is shipped off the island, you can downsize to a small studio when they're gone, to save money. If you and your spouse plan to work or spend a lot of time exploring the island or living abroad, it is a good option for you to leave the base because your place may be small, but you will not be in your house. every time! If you are in the center, you can also learn about Hawaii's lifestyle and culture and experience new things.

Depending on which option will suit you and your family better, there are some important things to consider. If you are planning to get real estate, you need to make sure you get the title as soon as possible. If the soldiers arrive before you, make sure they book accommodation as soon as possible while on the island to get the names.

Whether you choose 802 or Forest City, your appointment will be at MCBH; MCB Hawaii Housing Office for Forest City is located at 1571 Lawrence Road on the first floor, one block behind Mokapu Road. The 802 office is located directly at the Forest City office.

While you are waiting for housing, if your spouse will not have regular communication or contact, remember that your spouse or you go to Base Legal to get a Legal Authorization form. A POA will give you the power to handle certain situations for your spouse when they are gone. This is important to get before you send if your spouse leaves and you plan to move to Hawaii when they do.
